Lever Ends

For some reason that isn't obvious to me, the original Honda control levers for this model (and presumably others) have a flat end - refer to the photo at the lower left - and were covered with a slip on rubber sleeve. The original sleeves had a solid rubber half round end moulded into them that fit this flat end and made the covered end of the levers look round. Of course these specific covers (Honda part number 53180-028-670) have not been available for many years, but then even if you can find an NOS one, they are all now well over 40 years old and the rubber has lost much of its elasticity. However Honda does still make a rubber cover of a slightly different design under part number 95010-16001. When I first got one home, I didn't think it would have a chance of working as it is much, much smaller than the original. Referring to the middle photo below, the new part is at the top and an NOS original one is below it. Thankfully, being new meant it had a lot of stretch, and with a suitably shaped 'bump' for the handle end it slid on fairly easily and looks the part ! The photo of the newly installed end cap is on the lower right (just click to see a larger version).

Fuel Cock

The fuel cock didn't want to seal which puzzled me as there isn't much at all to it. The soft rubber items are still available from Honda, but even after lapping the back of the on/off lever the darn thing dripped. Ed Moore on the Honda 305 board offered to take a look at it and when he returned it to me I realised that the reason it dripped had nothing to do with the soft rubber seal or how it sealed. It had all to do with the two sealing gaskets on the screws that held the fuel cock to the tank ! On mine the original fibre washers had perished and on this design of fuel cock that means fuel will leak directly from the tank bypassing the shutoff valve and so then into the carburettors. Annoying and a bit embarrassing but live and learn. These specific fuel cocks are starting to become quite rare so if you have one, take care of it !
